Stunningly located on the slopes of Mt Titano, the oldest state in the world (founded in 391) is also one of the smallest (61 km2). San Marino mints coins, issues stamps, has its own army corps and police force and has preserved its architectural legacy, to such an extent that it has become a Unesco world heritage site. Nowadays its economy centres on wine-growing, tourism and the sale of stamps from all over the world. The rampart walk of the citadels commands magnificent views.
