In spite of a distinct melancholy, an atmosphere full of charm emanates from Oradea. Both Hungarian and Romanian, the city seems to have opted for whimsy in its architecture, except for the rigid surroundings that are the legacy of the Communist regime. Baroque volutes stand side by side with parodies of the Historicist era and the convolutions of the Secessionist style, highlighted once more by recent prosperity. A riverside promenade and romantic park complete the picture.
