Braila
The Essential
Interesting
Brăila, sometimes called Sleeping Beauty, is the site of houses whose former elegance and colours bear witness to the 19C opulence of its merchant owners. They grew rich thanks to cereal crops from Mutenia and the labour of Rom slaves. The cobbled streets, half-urban, half-rural, around Traian Square and Eminescu Street are full of surprises. The square framed by lovely facades is the site of blue clock which stands next to the church of the Holy Archangels, built in 1831 in a former mosque.
