Don't be put off by the fairly unattractive surroundings of the country's second largest city. Its charmless outskirts hide a real Baroque jewel, gathered around the theatrical Piața Sfatului (Council Square) and the superb black church. The lively little streets and secret passages of this German-looking city. At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, this former mercantile city of "Saxon country" has, furthermore, conserved many vestiges of its fortifications.
