El Puerto de Santa María
The Essential
It was in the small port of El Puerto de Santa María that Juan de la Cosa completed his mappa mundi (1500) showing the New World for the first time. In the 16C and 17C the town was embellished thanks to the trade with the Indies, resulting in the construction of small palaces and beautiful residences. Don't miss the town's old quarter, with buildings mainly dating from the 18C and 19C. El Puerto is also a popular seaside resort with attractive beaches and a lively atmosphere in summer.
