Lying 22km from Algeciras, this is one of Spain's youngest towns. The original 18C hamlet was established alongside the bastions of the Gibraltar defensive line, built to ward off the British, who had taken possession of the Rock of Gibraltar. La Línea de la Concepcíon only obtained village status in 1870, and was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, in honour of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the army. The town-centre streets are pleasant. The dynamic town is committed to promoting its cultural assets.
