Puerto Real
The Essential
Puerto Real was founded in 1483, 10km south of Puerto de Santa María, by the Catholic Monarchs - hence its name (meaning "Royal Port"). Nowadays this shipbuilding town is attempting to adapt to other activities, helped by Cádiz University, which relocated some of its faculties here. But its decline began when Napoleon invaded in 1810. The Renaissance and Baroque church, Iglesia de San Sebastián, is well worth visiting.
