La Axarquía

The region stretches from the slopes of the Sierra de Almijara down to the sea, in the easternmost part of the province of Granada. The coast is dotted with watchtowers built after the Reconquest in 1492 to prevent raids by Berber pirates. Subtropical crops (sugar cane, avocados) and vineyards prevail inland - where you also see plants grown under plastic, a characteristic of the Almería area - while the coast is thick with resorts.
