Alcalá la Real
The Essential
Interesting
This charming border town is located to the south of the province in an undulating landscape carpeted with olive trees. On the border between Christian- and Muslim-held territory since 1341, the town was the departure point for the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs. Today, Alcalá is a busy agricultural and commercial centre, and birthplace of the great poet Juan Ruiz, known as the Archpriest of Hita, as well as the medieval sculptors Juan Martínez Montañés and Pablo de Rojas.
