Lebrija
The Essential
Perched on a small promontory, Lebrija rises along the edge of the marshlands of the Guadalquivir estuary. Founded by Bacchus, the town prospered for a long time under Moorish rule, then after the Reconquest by Alfonso X in 1264, and up to the 18C, thanks to its abundant agricultural resources. The town is also the birthplace of Elio Antonio de Nebrija (1441-1522), the first grammarian of the Spanish language.
