Lebrija
The Essential
Perched on a small promontory, Lebrija rises along the edge of the marshlands of the Guadalquivir estuary. Legend has it that the town was founded by Bacchus; it prospered for a time under Moorish rule, then, after the 1264 Reconquista by Alfonso X, up to the 18C, thanks to its abundant agricultural resources. Lebrija is also the birthplace of Elio Antonio de Nebrija (1441-1522), the first grammarian of the Spanish language.
