The Essential
This impressive group of medieval buildings dominates the Alaya Valley. The stronghold (crenelated tower, square corner towers) dates from 1300, and the Dominican convent from the 18C. The most remarkable buildings are the Chapel of the Virgen del Cabello, with alabaster recumbent statues of Pedro López de Ayala and his wife, and the late-15C Church of San Juan Bautista, decorated with a spectacular 17C gilded wood reredos. A museum presents the history of the monastery, the military buildings and the Ayala family.
