This peaceful little town in a small valley was founded in 1404 by Bethencourt. He chose this site tucked away in the mountains as his capital, which blossoms today with flowers and lush palm trees. From the early days of the Conquista, Betancuria has retained a certain colonial style, in addition to a church, Santa María de Betancuria. There is also a small archaeology museum.
