Founded in 1478 in a palm grove (hence its name), Las Palmas is the largest town in the Canary Islands and one of Spain's major ports. It has two centres: Vegueta, the old city, and Puerto de la Luz, where most of the tourist activity is concentrated. Between them lies the Ciudad Jardín, a residential area that fully deserves its name (which translates as "Garden City"). The airport and harbour are transatlantic stopovers, making Las Palmas one of the gateway for visitors to the Canaries.
