Arrecife

Arrecife
The Essential
Situated on a coastline of reefs (recife in Spanish, hence its name), the main town of Lanzarote was defended from attacks from the sea by the 16C Castillo de San Gabriel; this castle was built on a little island and connected to the town by two bridges, one of which was a draw-bridge, Puente de las Bolas. Arrecife has a pleasant beach and a picturesque lagoon, the Charco de San Ginés, where fishermen anchor their boats. To the north, San José Castle (18C) was restored by César Manrique and transformed into an international contemporary art museum.
