It was in Villaviciosa that the future Charles V came to claim his new kingdom in September 1517. Its compact old quarter has preserved its elegant narrow streets, whitewashed and ochre-coloured houses, and two attractive Romanesque churches. At its heart, Plaza Carlos I is surrounded by aristocratic properties adorned with coats of arms, some of which have been converted into hotels. The Iglesia de Santa María has retained its Gothic rose window and Romanesque porch. Villaviciosa is also renowned for its cider production.
