Tordesillas
The Essential
Huddled on a steep bank of the Duero, this town gave its name to the famous Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), which divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. The line ran between the North and South Poles, passing 370 leagues west of Cape Verde: countries to the west of the line went to Spain, those to the east to Portugal, including Brazil.
