Montjuïc Castle

It was at the foot of the first castle, built in 1640, that the Catalan troops won the battle of the 26 January 1714 against Felipe IV. This strategic location was part of Barcelona's defensive system and was altered and extended several times. It is now a pleasant place to walk, commanding fine views over the port and the town. Following restoration work, the castle will become an International Centre for Peace, a "Memorial Centre" devoted to the castle's history and a Visitor's Centre about Monjuïc Hill.
