Considered as the "birthplace of Catalonia", the busy commercial town of Ripoll, tucked away in the foothills of the Pyrenees, owes its fame to the large Benedictine monastery of Santa María, founded in the 9C. Up until the 12C it served as a burial place for the Counts of Barcelona, Besalú and Cerdanya. The capital of Ripollès also has a pleasant historic centre and a few Modernist buildings.
