Gandesa
The Essential
A major wine-producing region, Gandesa is also a tragic reminder of the Spanish Civil War. Between July and November 1938, some 150,000 soldiers and civilians died at the battle of the Ebro, which pitted Franco's army against the government. The epicentre of this bloody conflict, Gandesa is now the site of a study centre related to the battle and has become the starting point of the Ruta de la Pau (Peace Road). It also boasts an old town of great architectural interest.
