Located at the foot of a small mountain range, in the shadow of its castle walls, Lorca is nestled in the Guadalentín valley. Although the town is quite extensive, the historical centre of this "town of a hundred coats-of-arms" is concentrated within a limited area. In 2011, it was seriously damaged by an earthquake, as a result of which many of its aristocratic buildings have only retained their façade. To counter-balance this, a national parador was opened within the walls of the castle in 2012.
