This town is known for its copper mines, which existed as far back as the Vikings. Falun's mining boom coincided with that of the whole country: its mines became Sweden's leading industry in the 17C. The industrial heritage here, including the wooden houses of miners and foundry workers, was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2001. A highly informative mining museum and the Dalarnas museum, the latter boasting extensive exhibitions on local folklore, add to Falun's appeal.
