Mora
The Essential
Recommended
This small town in the province of Dalarna is worth lingering in longer than others, despite its rather charmless outskirts, on account of its importance in Sweden's national imagery. Indeed, the painter Anders Zorn (1860‑1920), one of the country's most famous artists, was born and grew up here (see his house and museums). It also hosts the Vasaloppet cross-country ski race every year: the most famous race in Sweden. The town is small enough that you can get around the whole place on foot.
