When to go
Summer is the ideal season to visit Sweden – you can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities and even take a dip in the beautiful Lake Mälaren. The summers are hot in the south and mild in the north, where the sun practically never sets. At the end of June, don’t miss Midsommar, the longest day of the year, when the Swedes don traditional costumes and party all day (and night) long.
Come August, sometimes rainy, Stockholm’s inhabitants celebrate the end of the fine weather during the popular Cultural Festival which features concerts, plays and markets.
The magical Northern Lights in winter are another highlight of the year. The temperatures are of course very cold and the north of country is covered in a thick mantle of snow. You can go skiing in Laponia and skating all around Stockholm. There is little daylight, however, particularly in the Arctic Circle.
Spring and autumn are brief and the cold weather can often last for ever or arrive much earlier than expected.
