Jukkasjärvi is the most northerly village in the Torne valley. In summer, people come here to fish, go canoeing or go rafting on inflatables through the rapids of the Torne; in winter, options include dog sleigh rides, snowmobile safaris and skiing. The village is known for its astonishing ice hotel, which is rebuilt each year out of more than 1 500 tons of ice. The wooden church has a remarkable, brightly coloured altarpiece sculpted by Bror Hjorth in 1958.
