Initially a simple fortress (14C), the Gripsholms castle visible today was built by Gustav Vasa. It now houses the national portrait collection comprising 4 000 works from the 16C to the present day. The highlight here is the second floor with its remarkable decor from 1770-1780. In the tower of the theatre, the beautiful white salon of Gustav III, known as the Runda Salongen, was designed by Jean Eric Rehn, the creator of the Gustavian style. Admire also the elegant theatre with its original 18C stage machinery.
