Uppsala is Sweden's ecclesiastical capital and an intellectual centre boasting Scandinavia's oldest university. The cathedral, university and castle overlook the west bank of the River Fyris (Fyrisån). However, Uppsala is far from being a city which rests on its past splendours thanks to its large student population, who bring life to its streets and cafés. Uppsala is also the birthplace of Ingmar Bergman and the naturalist Carl von Linné. The latter's superbly preserved house-museum is open to the public.
