Lysekil developed in the 18C thanks to its herring fishing, and became a famous spa town in the 19C. A few hydropathic establishments still exist. The high street goes along the South Port, where the fishing boats that supply the canning factories moor. The tourist office (Södra Hamngatan 6) has information on the boat trips, night-time cruises and fishing trips. Havets Hus (at the end of Södra) houses a museum of coastal flora and fauna and that of the waters of Gullmarsfjord. Vikarvet (Turisgatan) is a museum providing an introduction to fishing.
