Strömstad is a popular seaside resort with a port busy with the comings and goings of ferries to Norway, a country it was part of until 1658. Nowadays, this bustling commercial centre has a reputation for its shrimps and fresh lobster (a fish market is held from Tuesday to Friday). Ferries operate from here to the Koster islands, Sweden's westernmost islands, which benefit from the mild effects of the Gulf Stream, hence their lush vegetation.
