Pleasantly nestled in a meander of the Aare opposite the Alps, the Swiss capital has no lack of appeals. In addition to attracting lovers of old stones, thanks to its Unesco-ranked medieval centre, the Paul Klee Centre is popular with contemporary art fans. Shopping addicts and night birds will be delighted by the six kilometres of arcades, home to fashionable shops and bars. In summer, the river is popular with bathers and the city takes on a holiday resort air.
