Meiringen became a major tourist junction when cars first took to the roads. It is the starting point for excursions to the Aar Gorge and Reichenbach Falls, but also an ideal stage on the Grimsel and Susten roads. The British author of Sherlock Holmes stories, Arthur Conan Doyle, was an honorary citizen of the town.
