Saint Gallen
The Essential
Recommended
An abbey founded on the spot by an Irish monk, Gallus who died in 650, is at the origin of St Gallen's rise to fame and fortune. Its magnificent Baroque cathedral and abbey library, both Unesco sites, are set in a historic neighbourhood rich in houses with overhanging jetties. Focused on service industries, the city is home to a number of renowned university centres. In summer, the St Gallen Open Air rock festival is a major attraction.
