The Essential
The high-altitude mountain spa town of Leukerbad, whose sulphur and gypsum-filled waters are recommended for the treatment of various ailments, already featured on the itinerary of hikers holidaying in the region in the 19C. The spot marks the end of the famous Gemmi Pass (2,314m above sea level), which starts in the Bernese Oberland and ends here in a vertiginous path carved into the side of the rock. Skiers may like to know that the domain is at an altitude of 1,400-2,800m.
