This welcoming, cosmopolitan city on the shores of Lake Geneva is both the world capital of the Olympic Movement, as well as being an arts and entertainment centre. The city centre and its embankments are particularly popular with a party-going youth come nightfall. The site has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and it flourished in the Middle Ages, later supporting the Reformation and taking part in the Enlightenment Movement. Lausanne University brilliantly perpetuates this past. Do not miss the wonderful Gothic cathedral.
