St Helier
The Essential
Interesting
The capital of Jersey owes its name to the saint who turned up not far from here in the 6C and lived as a hermit before being assassinated by pirates. Its period of growth came in 1600, when the governor took up residence in Elizabeth Castle. The island's main commercial centre, St Helier is a lively town with a decidedly English feel. Explore on foot, not forgetting the museums, in particular those in the rehabilitated docks; check out the wares on sale at the central market.
