The Essential
For over two centuries, Macclesfield was synonymous with silk production, which was carried out in 100 or so local mills. The story of silk is entertainingly and expertly told in two museums: the Silk Museum, which presents the different stages in silk manufacturing, and Paradise Mill, where guides demonstrate early-19C Jacquard handlooms with punched card controls. These are in fact the distant ancestors of modern computers.
