The Essential
For over two centuries, Macclesfield was synonymous with the production of silk, manufactured in 100 or so local mills. The story of silk is entertainingly and expertly told in two museums: the Silk Museum, housed in the town's Georgian Sunday School building, and Paradise Mill, where guides demonstrate early-19C Jacquard handlooms with punched card controls. These are in fact the distant ancestors of today's computers.
