Kingston-upon-Hull
The Essential
Hull, officially Kingston upon Hull, is a major port which once specialised in whaling. The old town, which lies between the River Humber and River Hull, was once surrounded by walls and a moat and has retained cobbled streets and inns from the Middle Ages and 17C. Most of Hull's docks were built along the east wall in the Georgian period; the oldest, Queen's Dock (1778), is now the site of Queen's Gardens.
