The Essential
The Romans discovered Buxton's warm springs and built baths here in the 1C AD. However, it was not until the Crescent, emblematic example of Georgian architecture, was built in 1780 that Buxton started to resemble a spa town such as Bath or Cheltenham. Today, the Crescent, which is due to open as a hotel with a spa, and the Opera House, are the centre of this small town that boomed with the arrival of the railways in the 1860s.
