The Essential
This charming village at the end of a green valley, only a few miles from the coast, owes its fame entirely to Richard Doddridge's 1869 novel Lorna Doone. The Doone family is said to have lived here, and it is in the restored 14C-15C church that Lorna married John Ridd. A path leads to Doone Valley (9km), which became famous with the publication of the novel.
