The "Capital of the Cotswolds", which remains this prosperous rural area's market town, was founded as a Roman fort called Corinium. By the 2C AD, it had become a fortified town, almost equal in size to London, at the heart of a productive landscape of villa estates. The confusion and devastation of the Dark Ages was followed by a long period of prosperity from the wool trade, enabling the construction of the town's fine parish church.
