Housed in a former electric power station on the banks of the Thames, Tate Modern is the most important modern and contemporary art museum in London. The museum owes its success to its rich collection of 20C and 21C art, all of which is presented in a resolutely anti-academic manner which has a striking effect on the visitor. However, the Tate is also an industrial building which has been superbly converted by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuren. The museum was extended in 2016 with the addition of Switch House.
