Located at the head of the Orwell estuary, Ipswich was a major commercial port in the Middle Ages. This lively town is mostly Victorian and modern in character, and its ancient streets are dotted with a dozen medieval churches. The docks will lead you to the Stour and its vale, the birthplace of - and a source of inspiration for - Constable and Gainsborough.
