Although medieval in origin, Leeds is first and foremost a Victorian city. Its centre follows a regular grid plan with its main streets crossing at right angles to each other. At its heart are the famous covered arcades, the majority of which open onto the main shopping street, Briggate. The former industrialised banks of the River Aire nowadays offer an array of exciting cultural attractions, at the forefront of which is the very beautiful Royal Armouries Museum.
