Situated at the confluence of the River Ouse and River Foss, York is one of the most beautiful cities in England and very popular with tourists - there are few cities of this size that have preserved their medieval architecture to this extent. Although the highlight of any visit here is undoubtedly York Minster, a perfect example of the English Gothic style, the city ramparts dotted with fortified gates known as "bars" are also very impressive. A young and dynamic city which is proud of its internationally renowned university, York is much more than a city-museum.
