Gretna Green
The Essential
Gretna became famous for couples who eloped here to marry at the local blacksmith's shop. In the mid 18C, a law made weddings illegal in England for anyone under the age of 21 without the consent of their parents: as a result, the number of marriage ceremonies taking place here boomed, as Scottish law only required a declaration in front of witnesses and an assurance that the future newlyweds were both aged 16 or over.
