Fort William lies on the shore of Loch Linnhe and at the crossroads of several routes, in the shadow of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. It is the Lochaber district's main town and grew up around a succession of forts and fortresses, strategically located to the south of the Great Glen. In summer, the town attracts visitors, as it is an ideal base camp for exploring the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the grandiose Glen Coe or the charming island itinerary.
