Jedburgh spans the River Jed and is sited on one of Scotland's trunk roads, the A68 (the Roman Dere Street). The town, which grew up around a castle and abbey, was granted royal burgh status by William the Lion in 1165. However, Jedburgh remained vulnerable in this border region and its history reflects the surrounding area's past. Today, it is a market town whose fine buildings exemplify regional architectural traditions.
