David Livingstone Centre
A former factory and the adjoining workers' accommodation, Shuttle Row (18C), is home to the David Livingstone Centre. Livingstone (1813-1873) used to live in one of these one-roomed units, which at the time were considered to be model living spaces. He worked at the local mill and then studied medicine in Glasgow. He then set off as a medical missionary but soon came to embark on a series of journeys that brought him renown as an explorer.
