This little town, where dark façades surround the market square, is in the beautiful Mawddach Valley in the middle of Snowdonia National Park. It is presided over by Cadair Idris, one of the most challenging mountains in Britain, albeit less than 900m high. The best approach to climbing it is by the Minford Path that starts on the southern flank. Precipice Walk, a marked footpath not far from the village, affords magnificent views of the mountains.
