This valley is home to a series of reservoirs built from 1892 onwards to supply Birmingham with water. The most recent dam, Claerwen, was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. The Elan Valley Visitor Centre, at the foot of the Caban Coch dam, has displays explaining how the dams work as well as information on the surrounding area and wildlife including the rare red kite.
