Mount Stewart

Highly recommended
On the eastern shores of Strangford Lough, this is one of Ireland's most visited sites. Set in magnificent gardens, this residence is the former home of the Stewarts, an eminent Scottish family that moved to Ulster in the 17C, and went on to play an important role in the country's political landscape. Family portraits decorate the interior, alongside porcelains, sculptures and English and Irish furniture. But the highlight isHambletonian by George Stubbs, a painting that depicts the horse with its grooms after a triumph at Newmarket.
